Escape to the Tailwater Lodge for a rare opportunity to enjoy the fabled waters of the Salmon River in Altmar, New York. At the Tailwater Lodge, you’ll enjoy the best accommodations anywhere on the river.
The Salmon offers 12 miles of world-class Chinook (King) and Coho salmon fishing, beginning at the river’s mouth and ending at the dam at the Lighthouse Hill Reservoir. These fish begin staging in the estuary in late August and enter the river around Labor Day. The Salmon River boasts two major fishing records: the largest Chinook ever caught in the Great Lakes region (weighing 47 pounds, 13 ounces) and the largest Coho (33 pounds, 4 ounces) caught anywhere in the world.
Steelhead are also plentiful in the Salmon. Washington (or winter-run) steelhead begin entering the river in late October. Summer-run steelhead, also called Skamania, show up around June, and are most abundant after heavy rains.
The Salmon also offers Atlantic salmon, brown trout, smallmouth bass, and rock bass. And for an open-water experience, you can charter a boat on Lake Ontario. Wherever and whenever you choose, the Tailwater’s experienced guides will help you bring home the catch of your life. Contact us for more information or to reserve a guide.
